From 1856 to 1857 in Utah, Mormon prophet Brigham Young played a role in shaping the mindset of the Mormon settlers resulting in a theocracy, heaps of polygamy, and the idea that avenging the blood of prophets was the only rational thing to do. Blood atonement and the Mormon Reformation are key aspects to understanding the religious doctrine and context of the time that shed light on the motivations and justifications used by the perpetrators of the massacre.
