Eric Lewis is a professor of Philosophy at McGill University, specializing in the philosophy of improvised art, and Black Aesthetics. He is the author of five books, and numerous other publications. He is also on the management team of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation, and the Toolkit of Care.
He is the Director of The Laboratory of Urban Culture, and co-founder and President of Arts in the Margins. Eric is an active improviser on brass and reeds, and is a member of Tone Reve, The Free Jazz Messengers, the Tuned Air Trio and the Instant Synthesis Ensemble. He also runs the annual new media art residency Koumaria, Greece.
