Labour escalates Holocaust row in Gorton and Denton by-election as Greens take a lead and campaign turns toxic. Right, so Labour Peer and the party’s Faith and Belief champion Mike Katz has gone public and told voters in Gorton and Denton that a Green Party candidate “demeans Holocaust Memorial Day” and is therefore unfit to represent the seat, while Labour’s own candidate is presented as the only acceptable option. The trigger for that exclusion is a short reply to a photograph of Angela Rayner lighting a candle, where the Greens candidate for the seat, Hannah Spencer wrote “Never again, but still selling arms to Israel”. Labour has not answered the arms sales point and has instead reframed the comment as a moral offence tied to Holocaust remembrance.
