Mark is the founder of the London-based pest control business, PestGone Environmental, whose clients include the rich and famous to members of the Royal Family. He is the bestselling author of the book Pests to Peace and appeared as a candidate on BBC’s The Apprentice in 2023. Prior to this, Mark started his career in the military. Mark and I met on an entrepreneurs’ programme and I knew that he would be the perfect guest to talk about value creation as he demonstrates it throughout his professional career.     Welcome back to The PIVOT Leadership Podcast. In this episode, we're focusing on how to build perseverance as a leader and exploring how resilience at work is imperative to this. To chat about this, I am joined Kathryn McEwen. Kathryn is a leading expert in organisational psychology and has an extensive and varied career. In the 1990s, she became a founding member of the Australian Psychological Society’s Coaching Interest Group and established an executive coaching business alongside colleagues. She holds specialist skills in conflict resolution and mediation and has achieved national accreditation as a mediator. Alongside all of this, through her research, Kathryn has developed the Resilience at Work Toolkit, providing practical strategies for building resilience and perseverance in leaders and teams which is what I would love to tap into today. We discuss how Kathryn became one of the top researchers in resilience at work, why she thinks it’s so important to persevere and learn to pivot as a leader, as well as how perseverance and resilience is imperative in scaffolding a team. As the hybrid working model has become more popular, managing a team with both in-person and remote workers requires new skills and tools. Leaders’ focus will need to shift from effort or hours at desks, to outcomes based on set objectives. It is important that they pivot and optimise their hybrid team by making passion contagious no matter where, or how, they are working. Today’s guest, Sarah-Jayne Bray, is an expert in this, having been an engagement manager for South Wales Police. Sarah-Jayne has been a part of the policing family for over 20 years. An experienced internal engagement manager, SJB has supported the NPCC Wellbeing of Investigator group since 2021. She initiated the creation of the Investigator Wellbeing Toolkit and is lead for the annual Investigator Wellbeing Week of Action, attracting more than 4,000 registrations making it one of the largest engagement events in the wellbeing calendar. Sarah-Jayne is a passionate supporter of diversity and inclusion, and was chair of the SWP Gender Equality Network, chairing the All Wales Gender Equality Network meeting throughout 2021. She is a member of the Thames Valley Women’s Network, leading the TVWN Boost Programme to improve the confidence of women in TVP. We’ll be discussing how Sarah-Jayne ensures she optimises her team to their fullest potential. She shares the difficulties they’ve faced in hiring for detective roles, and how they have overcome these challenges.
