The rise of Tuberculosis cases in Kentucky reached plague-like proportions. Jefferson County especially would experience a major rise in cases. With the Ohio river and wetlands nearby, it created a perfect breeding ground for the tuberculosis bacteria to grow, which resulted in an outbreak around the area. The rise in cases grew exponentially in the community, and residents were desperate for treatment. In 1911, Waverly Hills Sanatorium officially opened to patients, giving many people in Jefferson County hope for survival. Over 50 years, thousands of patients would lose their lives to tuberculosis within the walls of this building. Today, the 5 story, gothic revival structure still stands and is open to the public. During paranormal investigations, extensive amounts of paranormal evidence has been seen and documented within the walls of this old sanatorium.
