The novel tells the story of Joanna, a woman mentioned in the Bible as someone healed by Jesus and who financially supported him. The story explores her life as the daughter of a Sadducee priest, her arranged betrothal and later marriage to a Nabatean procurator in Herod's court, and her encounter with Jesus of Nazareth.
