The mayor purchases enough Krag carbine rifles for the new civilian police force on Mr. Olsen’s dime. At the nudging of the Mayor, Oscar is allowed by his father to fire one of the rifles at the town dump, and the experience leaves him with a loss of hearing in one of his ears. And as it turns out, the Mayor and Sgt. White has been up to no good, no good at all.
