In 2 Samuel Chapter 15 Absalom begins his treachery. For four years he misleads Israel about his intentions, then mounts a coup against David, raising an army, and marches on Jerusalem to take over the throne. It is 30 kilometres from Hebron to David - so David has just one day to make his escape. He wisely left people behind who could relay information, namely the priests who supported him.

As he leaves he finds out that his trusted friend and advisor Ahithophel has gone to Absalom’s side.
