In Genesis 43 we see that the famine is used by God in multiple ways. It was used to elevate Joseph, and to save Jacob’s family and now to force them to come to Egypt. God is remarkable in how he uses circumstances to bring about his will.

Jacob is too fragile to allow Benjamin to go, so Judah displays real sacrifice by putting his life on the line. Much later, Christ is called the Lion of Judah and lays down his life for us.

Jacob’s circumstances were tough, and it was hard to trust God, and eventually he does, partially because he has no choice. He is a changed man, as are all the sons.
