Summary:

Scarlett finds her way back to Tara, only to learn that her mother has passed away. Mammy and Dilcey relate the story of Ellen's death and the Yankees' use of Tara as headquarters. Gerald goes senile after the loss of Ellen. Scarlett goes searching for food the following morning, vowing never to be hungry again. Scarlett shoots a Yankee deserter who attempts to steal, and Melanie helps her hide the body. Scarlett uses the Yankee's horse to visit the nearby Fontaines. The household begins to pick cotton to sell.
