Students rebel against teachers. Civilians go against authorities. Christians defy God. One symptom of our culture is this: that when we’re not happy with something, we do something against it.

Likewise, the Jews of Malachi’s day weren’t happy with their lot. Considering their relationship as mere external, they openly defy God. They say, “What’s the point of serving God when I have gotten nothing out of it?” God responds by pointing them to a future Day. For God-fearers, this will be a Day of salvation and justice. Yet, for the unrighteous, those who persist in defying God, this will be a Day of immense wrath.

However, as what Malachi has said all along, God is gracious to offer salvation to these defiant Jews if they would return to Him before the great and terrible day comes. And likewise, there is salvatio ...
