On today's show I caught up with Neena Brown. Only she can tell her story because no one else's version does it justice. Ever since I was a young girl, growing up on the South Side Of Jane Street, I've always been singing. I was shy however and I would only sing and write in private. I knew that music this would be my outlet and safe haven from the chaos that occurred in my life. From my brother who m**** me when I was a little girl, to my grandparents passing away, my father always working and my sister being an alcoholic, music became my best friend and ally. After one night of confronting these matters, I was no longer welcomed in my own home. I just had too much bottled inside that I had to let out. From that turning point, music would became my priority. I got tired of that oppression and loneliness. I had finally let my music be my light & companion. Now with the help of my team and my mentor Billy Burnz, I now introduce the world to Neena Brown...
It's Episode 200 and today I caught up with the Hip Hop legend Saigon. You may be familiar with the him purely from his music or from his time playing himself on the HBO T.V show "Entourage". Born in Brooklyn but raised in Rockland County, New York, Saigon (aka Brian Carenard) developed his deft rhyming skills during his seven-year stint in prison, where he also earned the nickname "The Yardfather." His first important musical contact was DJ/producer Mark Ronson, who gave him studio time and access to other valuable contacts. The rapper later left Ronson's company, on good terms, in order to explore better options. Analogous to mixtape kingpins 50 Cent and Papoose, Saigon rose to prominence within hip-hop's top ranks, particularly in New York, on unofficial singles and mixtapes alone. Politically conscious and street-smart, the rapper became a formidable force when he was taken under the wing of Roc-A-Fella Records' in-demand producer Just Blaze, who shared his passion for early-'90s hip-hop.
