How can we know our salvation is real—and what should a transformed life look like? Peter answers by pointing to the visible fruit of faith: people who have been rescued from corruption should show steady growth in virtue and Christlike character. The question isn’t merely, Have I been forgiven? but, Is my life being changed?
Scripture teaches that faith is to be supplemented—with virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love—and that these qualities must increase. This growth requires intentional effort, but it is powered by God’s divine enablement. When these virtues are evident and growing, they guard us from being ineffective and confirm our calling; when absent, we risk spiritual short-sightedness despite claiming Christ.
