The ‘+’ in LGBTQ+ has become a symbol of inclusivity, representing the wide variety of gender identities and sexual orientations that exist today. It is an important reminder that not all gender identities or sexual orientations can be easily categorized into the traditional binary labels of male/female or gay/straight. By using ‘LGBTQ+’, we are recognizing and respecting the diverse spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations that exist today.
The addition of the ‘+’ to LGBTQ is an acknowledgement that there are many individuals who identify as something other than lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer.
