New Hampshire votes Tuesday. But Donald Trump is increasingly focused on the contest coming up at the end of next month: South Carolina.
The former president brought a slew of top Palmetto State officials onstage with him in Manchester on Saturday night, including Gov. Henry McMaster, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson.
“We’re going to be there in three weeks. So you know what I’m doing? I’m kissing ass,” Trump said.
It was a show of force by the former president, who has many of South Carolina’s top Republicans backing him over Nikki Haley, the state’s former governor.
And it was designed to send a message to New Hampshire voters, one that South Carolina House Speaker Murrell Smith put bluntly to the crowd: “If you win by a big margin here, we can finish the job in South Carolina.”
