In the late 1970s, Cleveland swore by Johnny Kane. He was the kind of plumber people bragged about—polite, punctual, cheaper than anyone, first on your doorstep before sunrise. He gave discounts to single mothers and veterans. “Perfect citizen,” folks said.

Then someone noticed a pattern. Every neighborhood he worked had one thing in common: someone always went missing. A teenage boy. A mailman. A whole family no one saw again. It didn’t click until a maintenance worker fished a wallet from a sewer pipe ten miles from where its owner vanished. Records showed Johnny had been the last to service that line.
