On August 16, 1942, A U.S. Navy Blimp also known as L-8 or The Ghost Blimp left port at 6:03 A.M. from Treasure Island, San Francisco. On board were the flight crew, Pilot Lieutenant Ernest Dewitt Cody, 27, and Co-Pilot Ensign Charles Adams, 35. This was Adam's first flight. Also on the Blimp were two depth charges, a .30 caliber machine gun, top secret documents, emergency rafts.
The crew were exploring an oil spot off the coast of San Francisco when that was the last contact with the pilots. Fishing vessels in the area spotted the Ghost Blimp approximately 30 feet above the ocean water before rising rapidly.
