Expansion joints are one of the most overlooked components in modern infrastructure, yet they play a critical role in the survival of massive structures. This video takes a closer look at how these unassuming segments allow buildings, bridges, and highways to flex, stretch, and contract with changing temperatures, seismic motion, and vibration from daily use. Using visual simulations, stress models, and seasonal time-lapses, we illustrate the slow but constant movement happening across structures we consider motionless. What seems solid and immovable is actually breathing and shifting in subtle ways that would tear it apart if not for the thoughtful inclusion of expansion joints.
