For many years after Superman IV, WB had struggled to get a new take on the Man of Steel off the ground. From Tim Burton's Superman Lives to J.J. Abrams' Superman: Flyby, nothing seemed to stick. It was only at the tail-end of the latter's existence that they decided to make a "direct" sequel to Superman II, with everyone recast and still taking place in modern day. What resulted was a movie that felt like it was written with melatonin for ink. Somebody save us.
