Starring James Caan as Frank, who has pretty recently gotten through an 11 year bid in Joliet, and has since structured his life as a safecracker buying a bar and a car auto body shop.

This life is disturbed when a Chicago Outfit Boss Leo (first appearance for Robert Prosky) slowly brings Frank and his partner Barry (first film for JIM BELUSHI) into his employ with a seductive vision of temporary employment that Leo wants to be more permanent.

Frank's budding romance with a waitress named Jessie (Tuesday Weld) and his mentor in prison Okla (Willie Nelson) who he's trying to get out before his heart gives out in his cell, leads him to take up Leo's offer.
