Breaking the Mold: Embracing Self-Paced Learning with the Modern Classrooms Project

In this episode Dustin and Ghazali talk to Toni Rose Deanon, who hosts the Modern Classrooms Project and does Community Engagement for MCP, as they focus on the overarching question "How can a self-pacing model support teachers and students in finding more success than the traditional method of teaching?" Toni Rose (they/them) has been an educator since 2010 with experiences ranging from MS English Teacher, Adult ESL Teacher, and Instructional Coach for Technology. Toni Rose strives to be the educator they never had growing up, so they focus on anti-bias, anti-racist work and aspire to create a brave space for everyone around them. As a queer Filipinx, they understand the importance of being represented, valued and feeling a sense of belonging. Toni Rose navigates this life with the curiosity of a 6-year old and a nonchalant don’t-give-a-f*ck attitude like a 90 year-old. If it doesn’t bring them joy, it’s a no for them. To stay grounded and at peace, they practice yoga, write, get lost in stories, and go on 3-mile walks / runs with their dogs in nature. For funsies, they like to pretend they’re so much better on rollerskates than they really are. Because they can’t sit still - thanks to their neurodivergence - home is wherever they are with their two dogs, exploring all parts of the world.
