Conversation V: DISCERNMENT IN THE UNSEEN

There is a world you cannot see. But if the unseen world is real, an important question follows: How do we discern what is actually happening?

In Conversation V of The Theology of the Unseen, Berry Mwamba explores one of the most important responsibilities of the Christian life: discernment.

From the beginning of Scripture, God reveals Himself as a God who communicates. He spoke to Adam and Eve, called Abraham into an unseen future, directed Moses, Samuel, David, Elijah and the prophets, and ultimately came to us through Jesus Christ. Through Christ, believers are reconciled to God and receive the Holy Spirit.

So hearing God should not be treated as something impossible or mysterious. But neither should every thought, emotion, impression or spiritual claim automatically be called the voice of God.

The key is positioning.

Through prayer, fasting, Scripture, sanctification, repentance, obedience and the fear of God, we learn to quiet the competing voices and become increasingly familiar with the One we follow.

Berry also explores a deeper dimension of faith: sometimes faith means holding firmly to what you have discerned God speaking within you even when others did not hear it, circumstances contradict it, and the fulfillment remains unseen. Faith is not only confidence in the promise—it is confidence in the One who made the promise.

This conversation also confronts the phrase, “God told me.” Scripture does not teach believers to despise spiritual messages, but neither does it teach blind acceptance: test everything; hold fast what is good.

And not every difficulty has the same source. Some things require repentance. Some require wisdom. Some require waiting. Some require resistance. Some require obedience. And some battles God may handle before we ever know they existed.

Discernment is not primarily becoming an expert on demons. Discernment begins with knowing God.

The safest place in the unseen world is not knowing everything that is happening.

It is being positioned with the One who does.
