Season 1

Bring it on with Abby and Elizabeth

Welcome to the cheer-ocracy! This teen comedy from 2000 introduced Layla and her best friend, Abby to the spirit stick, the Clovers, and the unmatched intensity of "Nationals." Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, and Gabrielle Union managed to show the world that cheerleading is more than just shaking pompoms while also touching on real issues like seeing people beyond stereotypes, acknowledging privilege, and the unfairness of cultural appropriation. Bobby had the pleasure of welcoming a new guest, our dear friend Elizabeth, to discuss everything from juicy lip gloss to female empowerment. Listen to this episode to find out how quickly things can go off the rails when you invite two thirteen year-old girls to be on the podcast! The Matrix with Russ

Explicit
Red pill or blue pill, that is the question... That's right, we watched The Matrix. This 1999 sci-fi hit turned us all into part-time philosophers and/or part-time conspiracy theorists back then, but does the threat of Artificial General Intelligence have the same grip on the current generation of teenagers? Spoiler Alert: it may actually be scarier watching it in 2026 than it was in 1999. We were lucky enough to have our good friend, Russ join us for this one and he has a lot to bring to the table. Listen to hear a great conversation between someone with a philosophy degree and someone with an unofficial (aka not real) movie degree AND to find out what Layla thought of this one! The Martian IN REVERSE with Uncle Mark and Uncle Allen

This week on Flix with My Family, we’re taking a page out of Missy Elliott's book to put our thing down, flip it, and reverse it. That’s right: the tables have completely turned for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi hit The Martian. Layla is taking over as host because—in a shocking turn of events—Bobby has never seen the movie! Watch the dynamic flip as Layla takes on hosting duties and Bobby steps into her usual spot for the very first time. Joining the role-reversal chaos are repeat favorites Uncle Mark and Uncle Allen to help break down the space-survival epic. Hit play to hear three brothers and a newbie host discuss their fear of space travel, argue about which actors stood out in this movie, and hear at least one silly Goose/Gosling joke! ***Please forgive the occasional echo in the audio on this episode!

Jerry Maguire with Papa Thompson

This episode's movie had Layla at hello. Bobby SHOWED HER THE MOVIE and she saw a side of Tom Cruise she hadn't seen before: Tom Cruise, the rom-com star. This 1996 hit won Cuba Gooding Jr. an Oscar for being an over-the-top diva of a football player and taught the world that the human head weighs eight pounds. Our special guest, Papa Thompson, is Rhiannon's dad and shares a love of rom-coms (and sports) with Bobby. Tune in to hear their thoughts on Renee Zellweger and Layla's critique of Tom Cruise's running form. Coming to America with Abigail and Uncle Mark

Explicit
Finally, the movie Bobby has been waiting for: Coming to America. Anchored by the incredible Eddie Murphy, this '80s classic follows a prince from the fictional kingdom of Zamunda as he heads to Queens to find a bride who loves him for who he is. This episode could easily be called "The One with All the Impressions," but it's really just Bobby and Mark joyfully reliving their teenage years while Layla realizes that a massive portion of her dad’s weirdest catchphrases come directly from this movie. Plus, we're joined by one of our best friends, Abigail! Tune in to hear how her sheltered childhood led to her seeing this comedy masterpiece for the absolute first time as a forty-something. The Birdcage with Aunt Annie

Our ninth episode has us cracking up and attempting to impersonate Agador, Starina/Albert, and Armand from the hilarious and heartwarming movie, The Birdcage. South Beach in the 1990s is the perfect setting for this comedy full of family drama, drag queens, love, and one very conservative senator. Listen in to meet Aunt Annie, hear Layla's thoughts on 90s fashion, and to learn about the source of a lot of Bobby's favorite one-liners. Titanic with Mom

Explicit
For our eighth episode, we watched a big one: Titanic! Come back to 1997 with us to watch the record-breaking movie that had us all swooning over Jack and Rose and reliving the icy downfall of the "Ship of Dreams." Our guest, Rhiannon (Mom), was the same age as Layla is now when this one came out--and thirteen might be the perfect age to see this epic movie for the first time. Listen to hear about one of the times Bobby got kicked out of a movie theater and to find out if young Layla's "Titanic phase" laid the ground work for her to be a Leo fangirl.

Grease with Cousin Maria

Our seventh episode features our first musical and the oldest movie we have reviewed yet, Grease! Our special guest, Maria, reminisces about her first time seeing the movie and how different it is to watch it through the eyes of a young teenager today. Will the catchy songs and flashy outfits be enough to win over Layla? Listen to this one for hot takes on full grown adults cosplaying as teenagers, "cool" smoking, and Travolta's tough guy walk. Show Maria love on Instagram and TikTok: @cghatbar

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective with Uncle Mark and Uncle Allen

In our sixth episode, we watch the movie that introduced Jim Carrey to the world as a ridiculous, obnoxious, over-the-top pet detective--whatever that is. 1994 was an epic year for Jim Carrey; he released Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. That was an entertaining year for teenage boys! Bobby, Mark, and Allen are definitely the target audience for this flick, but listen in to see if Layla appreciates slapstick comedy as much as they do and to see how this movie holds up thirty two years after its premiere.

Armageddon with Mom (and the first Joepisode!)

Our fifth episode was inspired by our family's awe of the Artemis II Mission. To the disappointment of NASA, we watched the wildly inaccurate and highly entertaining movie, Armageddon. This 1998 smash hit made us all laugh, cry, and sing. Listen to hear the whole family's take on how Bruce Willis saved the world.
