Today was all about finally securing my visa for Sierra Leone after yesterday’s delays. First, we needed to pay the $80 fee for each of us—me, Michael, and Freddy. They walked to a nearby bank to handle the payments while I stayed behind to organize the car. Their plan was to start walking again once we left the city; they’ve been walking since Senegal, covering about 30 km a day, finding villages where they can sleep under a roof and pay someone to cook. With their excellent French, they’ve been thriving out here.

When they returned, we realized the bank still owed me $20 in change, so we made another trip—this time through much easier traffic than the gridlock we hit the night before. After that, it was  ...
