The tuberculosis epidemic spread within the United States throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but certain states suffered more than others. The rise of Tuberculosis cases in Kentucky reached plague-like proportions. Jefferson County especially would experience a major rise in cases. With the Ohio river and wetlands nearby, it created a perfect breeding ground for the tuberculosis bacteria to grow, which resulted in an outbreak around the area. The rise in cases grew exponentially in the community, and residents were desperate for treatment. In 1911, Waverly Hills Sanatorium officially opened to patients, giving many people in Jefferson County hope for survival.
