We are introduced to the kindly Minor Canon, Mr. Crisparkle, and the dignified Dean, who are concerned about the choirmaster, John Jasper, after a mysterious illness. We then step into Jasper's shadowy rooms, where the bright and cheerful Edwin Drood arrives, full of life and talk of his impending marriage to the beautiful Rosa Bud.
