In the chaos of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion, we see the stunning exchange at the heart of the Gospel. Barabbas, guilty of rebellion and murder, is set free. Jesus, innocent and pure, is condemned in his place. On the cross, two criminals hang beside Him—one mocks, the other repents. And to that repentant sinner, Jesus offers the unthinkable: “Today you will be with Me in paradise.”
This is the picture of substitution. Jesus takes what we deserve—judgment, separation, and death—so that we can receive what He deserves—righteousness, acceptance, and eternal life. We bring our guilt; He gives His grace. We offer our failures; He gives His forgiveness.
