Is independence taught or learned?

"Back in the day, like in the 18 hundreds, if your kid misbehaved or even thought about misbehaving, you could like beat them with a wooden pole. Within different cultures, they still do that. So being raised with Asian parents, I'd say that affected me, I think. And it actually made me more disciplined." -AE Host
