A good way to undermine biblical authority and divine authorship is to demonstrate that the biblical writings seem to be mimicking earlier historical ideas and events. A well-known example is the historically revered Law of Moses. Because there are at least five ancient law codes that pre-date the traditional time of Moses, all bearing some similarities to the Mosaic Law, many people have claimed that the Law of Moses was copying earlier law codes.

Yet, Christians have historically believed that when God gave the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai, something new and special was happening. For example, Moses (holding the Ten Commandments) is the central figure on the east pediment of the United States Supreme Court building. He is flanked by other ancient law givers.
