In this episode of What Was She Thinking?, Kim and Sharla dive into A Different World and ask: Is Deborah living her own life—or following an inherited rulebook?

We think Deborah may be caught in Mindset Trap #9: The Inherited Rulebook—the belief that we should live a certain way because of what our parents, family, or society expect from us.

Kim and Sharla don't completely agree. Kim understands why Dwayne and Whitley want to set expectations for Deborah and make sure she gets the college experience they believe will help her succeed. Sharla wonders if they should loosen the reins and let Deborah figure out who she is and what she really wants—much like Denise Huxtable did.

We discuss our own HBCU experiences, the pressure to go to college because "that's what everyone does," Deborah's insecurity and accountability, and whether college is actually the right environment for her. And then there's the $10,000 question: Was Deborah wrong for putting $10K on the card to bring Summer Walker to campus?
