A year ago, we released the first ever episode of PLAN-ning Ahead, with the co-chairs of Shearman and Sterling's Pride Network.A year on, we speak with them again to see what they have been up to over the last 12 months as well as what is in the works and the new EDI challenges facing the legal sector.

PLAN-ning Ahead (8): Bridging the Gap - Why we need LGBTQ+ charities with Dominic Arnall

PLAN-ning Ahead, is a podcast series by Warwick PLAN's magazine, Planorama. We explore themes of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace, and how to 'get ahead' with advice and experience from LGBTQ+ leaders, CEOs and other inspiring individuals from some of the UK's leading firms. 42% of LGBT+ school pupils have been bullied in the past year, double the number of non-LGBT+ pupils. 1 in 5 LGBT+ pupils didn’t tell anyone they’d been bullied, with only 33% of LGBT+ pupils aware of a clear process for reporting anti-LGBT+ bullying in their school. These were some of the headline figures released by the LGBTQ+ charity ‘Just Like Us’ in November of last year, and today I’m joined by the charity’s Chief Executive, Dominic Arnall. Dominic has a wealth of experience in the charity sector, working with prestigious organisations such as the Shaw Trust, Stonewall, Mind and their LGBTQ+ mental health branch, ‘Mind Out’ before taking up his current role as CEO at Just Like Us.

PLAN-ning Ahead, is the podcast series of Warwick PLAN. We explore themes of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace, how to 'get ahead' in corporate industries and advice and experience from professional LGBTQ+ employees from some of the UK's leading firms. In this episode, we spoke to Rodney Wilson, one of the global founders of LGBTQ+ history month. Rodney is a history teacher in his native Missouri, where he made headlines by becoming the first openly out, gay teacher in the state. He continues to inspire generation after generation of students, whilst also continuing his work with the LGBTQ+ history months across the world. What started as an idea inspired by similar history months for other communities, is now a celebration that is observed in every corner of the world.

In this episode, we spoke to Jae Sloan, organisational development consultant and executive coach. Recognised as an Involve Top 50 OUTstanding LGBT+ Future Leader. and the Co-Founder and current Co-Chair of the Proud Science Alliance, we discussed the importance of representation and leadership in STEM industries, as well as the challenges they have faced as a queer, non-binary person throughout their career; the importance of constant growth and balancing your career and personal goals.

PLAN-ning Ahead, is the podcast series of Warwick PLAN. We explore themes of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace, how to 'get ahead' in corporate industries and advice and experience from professional LGBTQ+ employees from some of the UK's leading firms. In this episode, we talked to CEO: Chief Empathy Officer of the Inclusion Imperative, Geffrye Parsons. A former finance executive of 35 years, winner of multiple LGBTQ+ leadership awards, Geffrye now runs his own Diveristy, Equity and Inlcusion organsiation the Inclusion Imperative. In this episode we discussed Geffrye's acheivements in advancing workplace inclusion for LGBTQ+ people as well as his motivations behind wokring in this space, and the challenges the community faces in order to gain full equity and inclusion in corporate spaces.

PLAN-ning Ahead, is the podcast series of Warwick PLAN. We explore themes of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace, how to 'get ahead' in corporate industries and advice and experience from professional LGBTQ+ employees from some of the UK's leading firms. In this episode, we talked to CEO and Founder of Career Accelerator, Mayur Gupta. We discussed the work that his company does in order to support young people entering the corporate world, as well as his own journey as an entrepreneur at school, university and beyond. This episode tackles some of the stereotypes and assumptions around the modern-day style of 'entrepreneur' and 'hussler' as well as the personal challenges Mayur has faced throughout his career so far.

PLAN-ning Ahead, is the podcast series of Warwick PLAN. We explore themes of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace, how to 'get ahead' in corporate industries and advice and experience from professional LGBTQ+ employees from some of the UK's leading firms. In this episode, we talked to Carole Mehigan from Reed Smith. As well as her work with the law firm, she is a local student mentor, and speaker especially surrounding mental health. We discussed the importance of intersectional thinking when it comes to being an ally, as well as some of Carole's own experiences growing up and how she helped members of the LGBTQ+ community as a friend and ally.

In this episode, we talked to Dr Jane Traies, LGBTQ+ historian, author and novelist. We discussed her experiences, the importance of her work does by giving a voice to all voices of all generations of our community, and discussing her recent work supporting LGBTQ+ refugees.

In the first-ever episode, we talked to James Matthews and Jonathan Toffolo, the co-chairs of Sterling Pride: the LGBTQ+ network of the global law firm, Shearman & Sterling. We discussed their experiences as well as our main topic of the episode: Pride 365, the rising commercialism of Pride the importance of Pride all year round.
