In this episode Nancy Serrano speaks with Rita Valencia about the Zapatista's autonomous agricultural project. She describes how land is so much more than the physical territory, not just for food production. Rita explains the basis of the 5,000 year old Mayan food production system, the Milpa and how Zapatista communities are recovering their ancestral knowledge and practises. They discuss the ins and outs of putting a cup of Zapatista coffee on your table. She also speaks of present-day threats that communities in Chiapas are facing while still remaining crystal clear on their political position and opposing capitalism.
