#190 - How to overcome all-or-nothing & constant overwhelm
I spoke to 3 people last week about 1:1 coaching. Different situations, same problem underneath it all: they already knew what to do, so why can't they stick to it? The issue was the moment something went wrong or stopped working, there was no one to ask. That's when the spiral starts. Sifting through a million pieces of contradicting social media advice, trying to figure out "what's actually going to work?" That cognitive load is exhausting, and it's exactly what tips you from doing fine into crash-and-burn. This episode is about why "all or nothing" isn't a willpower issue; it's an overwhelm issue. And why having one person to bounce things off can lift more off your chest than any program ever will. Dive in and listen to exactly how I help my clients beat overwhelm and move away from the all-or-nothing mentality.
#189 - When there's no numbers to track, how do you know it's working?
You can be doing everything right and still feel like it's not working. This episode is about the intangible stuff (habits, mindset, the shit you can't put a number on) and how to actually know if it's working. A Simply Happy & Healthy client asked me a question I didn't have a clear answer for: "How do I know this is even working?" And I completely knew where she was coming from because I've felt the same... So I spent this whole episode trying to answer it. Properly, not just "trust the process." We get into why logic alone won't fix a habit problem, why "I know what to do, I'm just not doing it" is an emotional issue disguised as a logical issue, and the exact way I get clients, and myself, to find real evidence when there's no spreadsheet to point to. If you've ever felt "pretty good" about your progress but couldn't actually prove it to yourself... this one's for you.
#188 - Why am I more tired than ever, working 20 less hours per week?
I used to do 75-hour weeks as a personal trainer and felt fine. Now I work around 50-odd hours per week, and I'm mentally cooked by Wednesday night. My psych explained why, and it cracked open something bigger, including why Simply Happy & Healthy is actually named after a sentence a client said to me years ago, not a marketing meeting. Bit of an identity crisis in here, not gonna lie. Join the Simply Happy & Healthy waitlist here. Stop throwing out the entire week when one small inconvenience happens and learn to build sustainable habits that actually work for your brain.
#187 - Rabbit-holing ADHD advice, but avoiding the habits
If you've gone down the rabbit hole on the "ideal" supplements and advice for ADHD symptoms, the best nutrient timing, or what vitamin fixes what, but you haven't worked out or eaten a proper meal in days, this one's for you. I go down my own rabbit hole analysing a blood test, then walk through why all that micro-research is keeping you stuck in a state of overwhelm and what to do about it instead.
#186 - 3 weeks without tracking or training, here's what happened
You know how one skipped workout turns into a whole week and one “bad” meal makes you want to write the whole weekend off? Then Monday morning you're convinced you've fucked everything up and ruined all your progress? I just lived that for three weeks. No gym, tracking food, weigh-ins, more Rum and cake than I’ve had the last two years combined. And this morning, back into reality, my brain did the thing yours does: holy shit, have I ruined everything I worked for? That thought lasted 5 seconds… Because falling off isn't the same as failing. In this episode, I break down exactly what those three weeks looked like, what came back fast when I picked things back up, and some interesting things I noticed being off my ADHD meds. If you’re a very “on a diet - off a diet” person” and one small thing makes you want to quit… I built Simply Happy & Healthy for exactly this. #185 - Structure gives you freedom, not restriction
One of my clients spent five minutes telling me that structure feels like restriction. Like the Star Wars trash compactor scene. Then I asked her one question, and it changed the way she thought about structure. In this episode, Travis breaks down why structure isn't the enemy of freedom, it's actually what creates it, and why the reason healthy habits feel suffocating has nothing to do with the habits themselves. If you've ever felt like routine is rigid and restrictive, this one's for you.
#184 - Failure is mandatory
One of my clients had five great sessions in a row with her physiologist. Then after one 'bad' session, she messaged me convinced she'd failed and was back at square one. In this episode, I break down why failure is a built-in requirement of the process, and why learning to recover from it (instead of scrapping everything and starting again) is the main thing that leads to actually sustaining your results. There's a reason elite athletes deliberately train to fail. And once I explain it, you're never going to look at a bad day or week the same way again.
#183 - You're not lazy, you're just not digging deep enough
This episode is about a woman who booked a call with me. She knew she was overthinking and overcomplicating everything. She was already working with a coach, so I decided to help her figure out why she wasn't executing her coach's plan. She wasn't going to the gym because she kept going home first. She wasn't meal prepping because her parents were in the kitchen asking questions. None of that was the actual problem. The actual problem was fear of judgment at the gym, at home, and in her own head. And once that got named, everything else made sense. Travis breaks down: Why going home before the gym is almost always a mistake (and what to do instead) The door phenomenon: how changing your physical environment kills your intentions How to handle parents, partners, or anyone who micromanages you What actually happens when someone judges you Why "just do it" works for 1% of people and fails the other 99% The symptoms aren't the problem. The root cause is. And until you find it, you'll keep hitting the same wall. Dig deeper.
#182 - 4 ways all-or-nothing overthinkers actually build habits
Travis breaks down the four things actually keeping you stuck, and spoiler, it's not laziness or lack of discipline. He unpacks why everything you've been taught about consistency is actually working against you, why your perfectionism (self-sabotage) is disguised as a consistency problem, and how knowing which "season" of life you're in right now could change everything. This is the stuff he coaches people through every single day. Real mindset shifts, practical reframes, and tools that make habits stick when life gets in the way, and a good old tangent or five. If you've ever crashed and burned on a 'perfect' plan or feel like you're always second-guessing everything and starting over, this one's for you.
#181 - ADHD Nutrition Research Expert Annika @thenutrimindlab
In this episode, Travis (@travismurrells_) sits down with ADHD nutrition research expert Annika (@thenutrimindlab) to explore the often-overlooked intersection of ADHD, hormones, and nutrition, specifically for women. Annika breaks down why women with ADHD experience perimenopause symptoms up to 10 years earlier than the general population, and why declining estrogen makes ADHD symptoms progressively worse over time. They unpack how hormonal shifts affect dopamine, gut health, calcium metabolism, and why standard diet plans so often fail women with ADHD. The conversation gets real about the emotions of late ADHD diagnosis, the grief of realising you've been living life on "hard mode," where crash diets and rigid nutrition plans really fail, and how to build self-trust again. If you're a woman with ADHD wondering why nothing seems to work, this episode will change how you think about your body, your hormones, and your relationship with food. Annika's Eat to Focus Cookbook, filled with 70+ delicious dinners, breakfasts, snacks, and drinks that are designed to be both accessible and nutrient-dense to optimise your brain and nervous system.
