The Stuff of Legend: Heinrich Schliemann's Life and Work by American School of Classical Studies at Athens

Episode notes

The excavation of Mycenae by Heinrich Schliemann and the ensuing legendary discoveries in the 1870's have been discussed in numerous books and articles. The name of the Greek archaeologist who was assigned to supervise the excavation on behalf of the Greek state, Panayotis Stamatakis, went largely unacknowledged.

In this podcast, Eleftheria Daleziou has invited Dr. Dora Vassilikou, the author of the book The Chronicle of the Mycenean Excavations 1870-1878 (Το xρονικό της ανασκαφής των Μυκηνών 1870-1878) to discuss the crucial role of Stamatakis in the Mycenean discoveries.
