In his telegram to the Greek King George I in November 1876 Heinrich Schliemann wrote: “The treasure [the Mycenean finds] is sufficient enough to fill the rooms of a large museum, one that will be the most prominent in the world; a museum which will attract thousands of visitors to Greece for centuries to come, foreigners from all countries” («Ο θησαυρός ούτος αρκεί μόνος να πληρώση μέγα μουσείον, όπερ έσται το λαμπρότερον των επί του κόσμου, και όπερ καθ’ όλους τους επιόντας αιώνας θέλει ελκύσει εν Ελλάδι μυριάδας ξένων εκ πάσης χώρας»).
