Some teachers would say you are either awake or asleep, enlightened or not. This can be misleading as there are stages - to me they are more like the dream state: 1. Totally asleep and dreaming, not knowing you are dreaming and identified with your dream like it is real 2. Awake but still in the dream, knowing you are dreaming but still identified with the dream and what is going on, but more relaxed about it, you know its a dream - lucid dreaming. 3. Awake from the dream - the activities and character you played in the dream is gone, only the dreamer remains. Of course this could all be BS!
