Lie: Humans Always Know Best

What Causes Us To Get In Our Own Way?

1) Shallowness Of Faith

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit…” (Colossians 2:8a ESV)

In continuing the theme of freedom, Paul urges the church to not become captive to philosophy (worldly ways of thinking) and empty deceit (outright lies). Why is it so common for people to be led astray by viewpoints that are so obviously opposed to God’s Word?

This happens in the hearts of people who are not deeply rooted in Scripture or consistently renewing their minds with truth (Romans 12:2). When you know what the real thing looks like, you will not be led astray by cheap imitations!

2) Commitment To Tradition

“...according to human tradition…” (Colossians 2:8b ESV)

The “traditions” Paul refers to are likely a nod to the cultural norms of the region, shaped by a blend of religious practices, family rhythms and centuries of collective decision-making. Today, many of the decisions we make and viewpoints we hold stem from how we were raised by our parents, who were themselves shaped by how their parents raised them.

While it is wonderful when parents disciple their children and model obedience to Christ, unhelpful or harmful habits can also be passed down. Christian maturity requires us to look honestly at our habits to see if they align with God’s Word. If they do not, then we must trust the Holy Spirit to help us walk in truth.

3) Obsession With Logic

“...according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8c ESV)

Scholars debate the exact meaning of "elemental spirits," generally viewing the term as either literal demonic forces or the basic principles humans use to understand the world.

Either way, Paul's underlying point is clear: he is challenging our fundamental assumptions about how the universe operates. While God certainly uses human tools like science and education, no earthly philosophy or discovery can supersede His sovereignty. There is no human wisdom greater than His finished work on the cross!

Big Idea:

It is easy to let human logic, cultural habits, and worldly philosophies slowly push God out of the center of our lives. True maturity requires us to evaluate our thinking against Scripture so we do not get trapped by cheap imitations of truth.

Let’s Think About This:

Question #1) What are some cultural ideas or trends today that sound good on the surface, but actually go against what God says in Scripture?

Question #2) How can we tell if a habit is helping us grow or holding us back?

Question #3) Why is it so tempting to rely strictly on human logic or popular opinion instead of trusting God when making major life decisions?
