Learning to Enjoy God’s Presence

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8 (NKJV)

There was a season when I thought spending time with God had to feel extraordinary every day. If my emotions were stirred, I believed I’d had a good quiet time. If they weren’t, I quietly assumed something was wrong with me. It took me a while to realize that I had confused God’s presence with my feelings.

Every healthy relationship is built in ordinary moments. A strong marriage isn’t sustained by anniversaries alone but by everyday conversations, shared meals, laughter, listening, and simply being together. Fellowship with God grows the same way. It isn’t built on occasional spiritual highs but on the quiet decision to keep showing up.

That’s why James simply says, “Draw near to God.” He doesn’t describe a complicated process or a spiritual formula. He gives an invitation. God isn’t asking you to impress Him before you come. He’s inviting you to know Him.

Some days your prayers will feel rich and full of joy. Other days they’ll seem simple, even ordinary. Don’t mistake ordinary for unimportant. The deepest relationships are often formed through consistent faithfulness rather than dramatic experiences.

If you’ve been waiting until you “feel close” to God before spending time with Him, try reversing the order. Spend time with Him because He is worthy, because He has welcomed you through Christ, and because fellowship is how relationships grow. Feelings may follow, or they may not. Either way, God is present.

Enjoying God’s presence isn’t about chasing an experience. It’s about learning to treasure the Person who has promised never to leave you.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You are always near. Teach me to enjoy fellowship with You, not because of what I feel but because of who You are. Help me build a daily rhythm of seeking You with a sincere heart, trusting that every moment spent with You is shaping my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
