Season 2

When Christians Disagreed: Who Had the Truth?

When Christians Disagreed: Who Had the Truth? As Christianity spread after the apostles, disagreements about doctrine became increasingly visible. But how did early Christians decide which teachings were faithful to the apostolic message? In this episode, we meet Irenaeus of Lyons and explore how he responded to competing Christian teachings in the second century. Rather than simply appealing to personal opinion, Irenaeus looked to Scripture, apostolic teaching, and the churches he believed had preserved connections with the apostles. His writings give us an important glimpse into how early Christians understood truth, tradition, and continuity. If we're investigating the claim of a Great Apostasy, these questions matter. Did Christianity simply abandon the teachings of the apostles, or were early Christians actively debating how those teachings should be understood and preserved? Let's follow the evidence.

What Happened After the Apostles?

What Happened After the Apostles? What happened to Christianity after the apostles died? In this episode, we take our first step into the generations that followed the apostles and begin examining what the historical record can tell us about the development of early Christianity. Christian communities continued to grow, teach, worship, debate, and defend what they believed. But disagreements also emerged, raising important questions about Scripture, authority, doctrine, and what it meant to remain faithful to the Christian message. If we're investigating the claim of a “Great Apostasy,” these early generations are an important place to begin. Did Christianity suddenly abandon the teachings of the apostles, or do the surviving writings reveal something more complex? We'll begin looking at the Christians who came next, what they wrote, what they believed they were preserving, and how their voices can help us understand the development of Christianity. The goal is simple: listen to the sources, ask questions, and follow the evidence.

The Great Apostasy: What Exactly Are We Looking For?

Was there really a “Great Apostasy” after the apostles? In this opening episode of Season 2, we begin investigating one of the biggest questions in Christian history: Did the original Christian faith gradually change after the apostles died? Rather than starting with a conclusion, we start with the evidence. What happened to Christianity in the generations after the apostles? What did early Christians believe, teach, and practice? And if Christianity truly experienced a major departure from its original faith, what would we expect the historical record to show? Throughout this season, we’ll explore the writings of early Christians, examine their beliefs and disagreements, and follow the historical evidence as we ask what changed, what remained, and why. The goal isn't to tell you what to believe. It’s to investigate the story for ourselves. Because before we can decide whether there was a Great Apostasy, we first need to understand what actually happened.
