Episode notes

On January, 1st 2007, Bob Lyren, arrived in Manila on what was supposed to be a month-long vacation to visit friends. He stayed in Asia for the next 13 years, living and working for extended periods of time in the Philippines, Thailand, and most recently, Japan. In March of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, he was forced to return to his hometown in Ohio. However, instead of spending the lockdown isolated and indoors, Lyren decided to take an open-ended, solo motorcycle trip across the United States, documenting his journey in a moto vlog called “No Direction Home”. In this episode, Lyren and I discuss his adventures traveling and living as an expatriate in Asia. How engaging with, and assimilating into, foreign cultures has enriched his experiences living abroad, and how going out on the road, and into the unknown, is helping him find his way back home.
