Well, It Looked Like My Car

Hello,

Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break!

Have you ever walked out of a store, marched confidently across the parking lot, and tried to open your car door…

only to discover it wasn't your car?

You pull the handle once.

Locked.

You pull it again—because apparently the car didn't understand you the first time.

Then you look through the window and think, “Wait a minute. I don't have a red jacket on my passenger seat.”

That's when you slowly look around, hoping the actual owner isn't standing behind you wondering why you're trying to steal their car.

And there, three spaces away, is your car.

Looking, exactly where you left it.

At that point, there's only one thing to do.

Walk away confidently like the whole thing was intentional.

Life has a funny way of reminding us that just because something looks familiar doesn't mean it's the same.

Coffee is like that, too.

Two cups of coffee may look almost identical, but what you experience when you taste them can be surprisingly different. Coffee naturally contains many aromatic compounds, and our sense of smell plays a tremendous role in how we experience its flavor.

That's why you might sip one coffee and notice something chocolatey or nutty, while another may remind you of fruit, flowers, caramel, or spices.

And here's what's fascinating: those flavors don't necessarily mean somebody added chocolate, nuts, or fruit to the coffee. Many of those characteristics can develop naturally through the coffee's variety, where and how it was grown, how the coffee cherries were processed, and how the beans were roasted.

There was a whole journey behind that cup before it ever reached your hands.

People are like that, too.

We can look at someone and think we know their story.

We see the smile.

We see the nice clothes.

We see somebody laughing and having a good time.

But we don't know everything that person experienced before they arrived at that moment.

Maybe they've overcome something difficult.

Maybe they're carrying a worry they haven't told anybody about.

Maybe they're rebuilding after a disappointment.

Or maybe today is simply the day they desperately needed somebody to be kind to them.

That's why kindness is so important.

We don't have to know somebody's entire story to treat them with compassion.

A smile doesn't cost anything.

A kind word doesn't require an appointment.

And sometimes asking someone, “How are you doing?”—and sticking around long enough to hear the answer—can mean more than we realize.

So today, enjoy the differences in the people around you just as you enjoy the different characteristics in a good cup of coffee.

Everybody has a story.

Everybody has taken a journey, and everybody could use a little kindness along the way.

Now, the next time you walk across a parking lot and your key won't open the car door, don't immediately assume your key is broken.

Take a good look through the window first.

Because if there's a stranger's jacket on the seat and a Chihuahua staring back at you…that's probably not your car.
