THE REFRIGERATOR CONVERSATION Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever opened the refrigerator, stared inside for twenty seconds, closed it—and then opened it again five minutes later? Nothing has changed. There wasn't a cheesecake there the first time. There isn't one now. But apparently, we're optimistic people. Sometimes we're looking for something without even knowing exactly what we want. Coffee drinkers understand preferences like that. Two cups can both be coffee and still offer very different experiences because origin, roast and preparation can influence aroma, body and flavor. That's part of what makes discovering a coffee you really enjoy so much fun. Life has seasons like that, too. We know something is missing, but we aren't always sure what we're searching for. Peace? Direction? Purpose? Reassurance? That's where faith points us somewhere deeper than another open refrigerator door. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Notice where Jesus tells us to begin seeking God first. Before worry. Before trying seventeen solutions. Before convincing ourselves, we have to figure everything out alone. Faith begins by turning toward God and trusting Him to provide the wisdom and direction we need. So tomorrow morning, before opening that refrigerator for the third time, brew yourself a cup of coffee, spend a little time with God, and remember—you may not know everything the day holds, but you know Who holds you through it. THE PASSWORD THAT APPARENTLY ISN'T YOUR PASSWORD Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Nothing tests a person's character quite like seeing: INCORRECT PASSWORD. Excuse me? I've used that password approximately 847 times. So, you type it again—slowly. INCORRECT PASSWORD. Now it's personal. You click “Forgot Password,” create a new one, and the computer announces: NEW PASSWORD CANNOT BE THE SAME AS OLD PASSWORD. Oh, so NOW you remember it! Coffee has a memory lesson of its own—not because coffee remembers passwords, thankfully, but because aroma plays a tremendous role in how we experience flavor. What our nose detects contributes significantly to what we perceive when we're enjoying that cup. Sometimes what we remember changes our experience, too. When life becomes difficult, faith invites us to remember who God has already proven Himself to be. Psalm 77:11 says, “I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.” When today's circumstances make you wonder where God is, remember yesterday's evidence. Remember the prayer He answered. Remember the door He opened. Remember the strength He gave you when you didn't think you could take another step. Faith isn't pretending today's problem doesn't exist. It's remembering that today's problem hasn't erased God's faithfulness. Now, if only we could remember where we wrote down that new password. THE AUTOMATIC-DOOR REJECTION Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever walked toward an automatic door, and it didn't open? Suddenly you're standing there wondering if you've become invisible. You step backward. Forward. Backward. Forward. Then somebody walks up behind you and—WHOOSH—the door opens immediately. Well! Apparently, the door has standards. Coffee gives us another reminder that timing and movement matter. During brewing, water needs enough contact with the coffee grounds to extract desirable flavors. Too little extraction can leave a cup tasting weak or sour, while pushing extraction too far can bring out less pleasant bitterness. There is a balance—and sometimes there is waiting. That's difficult for us because we like doors to open immediately, especially when we've prayed about something. But Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” Waiting doesn't mean God has forgotten you. Sometimes the door hasn't opened because the timing isn't right. Sometimes God is strengthening us while we stand there. And sometimes the direction we expected isn't the direction He has planned. Faith says, “Lord, I trust You even while I'm waiting.” So don't panic because the door hasn't opened yet. And if it's an actual automatic door... try waving your arms. Faith is wonderful, but that sensor still needs to see you. Visit Cager’s Coffee Hut at www.cagerscoffeehut.com, and remember to keep brewing kindness one cup at a time.

THE VOICE-TEXT BETRAYAL Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever dictated a text message to your phone and trusted it without reading it before hitting send? That's living dangerously. You say something perfectly normal like, “I'll meet you after church,” and your phone decides you said, “I'll eat you after church.” SEND. Now you're staring at the screen thinking, Can I move to another state before they read that? One tiny change can completely alter the message. Coffee has something similar going on. What we taste in the finished cup is influenced by extraction—the compounds water pulls from the coffee grounds. Brewing variables such as grind size, contact time and the coffee-to-water relationship can affect that extraction and therefore the final flavor. Small things can make a noticeable difference. Faith often works through small things as well. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20, “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed... nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Sometimes we think we need enormous faith before God can do anything in our lives. Jesus pointed to something tiny—a mustard seed. Maybe today your faith doesn't feel enormous. That's okay. Give God the faith you have. A little faith placed in a great God is still faith. And before sending your next voice-text, perhaps exercise another spiritual gift: proofreading. THE GROCERY CART WITH A MIND OF ITS OWN Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever grabbed a grocery cart that apparently has unresolved emotional issues? Three wheels are headed toward produce, but wheel number four has decided you're going to the bakery. You're pushing left. It's pulling right. You're apologizing to strangers because your cart keeps drifting into their personal space. By aisle six, you're not shopping anymore. You're wrestling livestock. Interestingly, coffee can behave differently depending on how it is prepared, too. The size of the coffee particles affects how quickly water can extract flavor. Finer particles generally expose more surface area to the water, while coarser grounds expose less. That's one reason different brewing methods work better with different grind sizes. And that makes me think about direction. Sometimes life starts pulling us toward worry, fear, frustration or impatience. Before long, we're headed somewhere emotionally that we never intended to go. That's when faith helps us correct our direction. Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Notice that last part: He shall direct thy paths. When life starts pulling sideways, we don't have to follow it. We can stop, pray, trust God and allow Him to straighten our direction. Some days you need strong faith, good coffee and possibly a grocery cart alignment. THE FITTED-SHEET FIASCO Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, There are certain things in life that humble a person quickly, and one of them is trying to fold a fitted sheet. You start confidently. You find the corners. You tuck one corner into another like somebody demonstrated on television. Thirty seconds later, you're holding what appears to be a giant cotton octopus. Eventually, most of us just wad the thing into something vaguely rectangular, shove it into the closet and announce, “GOOD ENOUGH!” Then we shut the door quickly before it escapes. Coffee has its own lesson about keeping things tucked away properly. Once coffee is opened, exposure to air, moisture, heat and light can gradually affect its freshness and flavor. That's why good storage matters. A tightly closed container in a cool, dry place helps protect the coffee you want to enjoy tomorrow just as much as the cup you're brewing today. Our faith needs guarding, too. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Every negative voice doesn't deserve storage space in your heart. Neither does every fear, disappointment or discouraging thought. Guard what God has placed inside you. Fill your heart with His Word, remember His faithfulness, and don't allow today's frustration to steal tomorrow's confidence. And as for that fitted sheet? Close the closet. Nobody needs to know. The Parking Spot Memory Test Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever walked out of a store and suddenly realized you have absolutely no idea where you parked? You were so confident when you went inside. Forty-five minutes later you're standing in the parking lot staring at six rows of cars that all suddenly look identical. So you start walking confidently in one direction because you don't want anybody to know you're lost. That's ridiculous, of course. Nobody is watching. But now you're committed. Eventually you start clicking the button on your key fob hoping your car will yell, “OVER HERE!” Finding coffee once required a little search too. Here's an interesting fact from coffee's history: coffee plants were once transported long distances as living plants and seedlings, and maintaining viable plants during lengthy sea voyages was no simple task. Some of the coffee cultivated in different parts of the world today can trace its agricultural history through remarkably small numbers of plants that survived those journeys. Imagine that—a plant survives a difficult trip, gets planted somewhere completely new, grows, reproduces, and becomes part of an agricultural tradition lasting for generations. That's quite a journey. And haven't we all had a few journeys that didn't go exactly as planned? Sometimes we end up somewhere we never expected to be. Yet that doesn't mean something good can't grow there. Maybe today's detour becomes tomorrow's blessing. So don't panic when life doesn't look exactly like the map you drew for yourself. Keep going. Keep growing. Keep laughing. And if you temporarily lose your way, there's no shame in pushing the button and listening for the horn. The Sneezing Emergency Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever felt a sneeze coming while both of your hands were completely occupied? That's when your nose decides, “This is my moment.” You're carrying groceries, holding your keys, balancing your purse, and suddenly—“Aaaah...aaaah...” Now you're desperately trying to put something down before the grand finale. And then? The sneeze disappears. You stand there waiting. Nothing. You start walking again. ACHOO! Apparently even your own nose enjoys keeping you humble. Coffee has a curious sensory story too. When we experience flavor, our sense of smell plays a major role. While our tongue detects basic tastes, many of the characteristics we describe as flavor are influenced by aromas traveling through the back of the mouth toward our olfactory system as we eat or drink. That's why having a stuffy nose can make foods and beverages seem surprisingly bland. So enjoying coffee isn't just something your taste buds are doing. Your nose is part of the experience too. It's another reminder that things often work together in ways we don't notice. The same is true with people. One person may do something that seems small, but it can make somebody else's job easier. One encouraging word can change the direction of someone's day. One simple act of kindness can travel farther than we ever know. So today, don't underestimate the little contribution you make. And somewhere between the sneezes, errands, phone calls and unexpected interruptions, make room for a good coffee break. The Cart Return Victory Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, There are days when accomplishments are big. Then there are days when you unload the groceries, return the shopping cart all the way to the cart corral, get back into your car and think, “Well, look at me being responsible!” Nobody applauds. There's no trophy. You don't even get a sticker. But somehow you still feel like you've accomplished something. And you have. Little things matter. Here's an interesting little piece of coffee history: coffee cultivation has traveled across continents over centuries, but coffee plants aren't naturally suited to every environment. They generally thrive within particular tropical growing regions, which is why you hear the term “Coffee Belt.” This broad zone circles the globe between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and includes many of the world's coffee-growing countries. So that cup sitting beside you may have started its journey thousands of miles from your kitchen. Think about all the people involved before coffee ever reaches us—people who grow it, harvest it, process it, transport it, roast it, package it, and eventually prepare it. It makes an ordinary cup seem a little less ordinary. Life is like that too. Most things we enjoy involve people we'll never meet. That's a good reason to appreciate the small things and the people behind them. Today, notice something ordinary and be thankful for it. Hold the door. Return the cart. Say thank you. Give somebody a smile. Nobody may give you a trophy, but kindness was never supposed to require one. The Shampoo Bottle Olympics Hello! Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break, Have you ever reached the very end of a bottle of shampoo and suddenly become an engineer? You shake it. Nothing. You turn it upside down. Nothing. Then you add a little water and shake it like you're mixing a scientific experiment. Suddenly you've managed to get three more shampoos out of a bottle you were convinced was empty. We can become remarkably resourceful when we don't want to open the new bottle yet! Coffee producers have learned a few things about using what they have too. Here's an interesting coffee fact: after coffee cherries are processed, the outer fruit and other by-products don't necessarily have to become waste. In some coffee-growing regions, these materials are being explored for uses such as compost, soil amendments, fuel sources, and other agricultural applications. In other words, the cup of coffee we enjoy is only one part of the coffee plant's story. There's something worth remembering in that. We live in a world that is quick to discard things—and sometimes people—when their original purpose seems finished. But experience has value. Wisdom has value. Time has value. And sometimes the season you thought was over becomes preparation for something you never expected. So don't be too quick to decide that something in your life has no further purpose. Enjoy today for what it is, laugh at yourself occasionally, and don't underestimate what can come from what you already have. Pour yourself a cup and visit Cager’s Coffee Hut at www.cagerscoffeehut.com. And yes, eventually you really do have to open the new shampoo. So, enjoy today, and remember to keep brewing kindness one cup at a time.
