Paul’s old life was real, and so was the damage he had done. But God’s call was not limited by the worst thing in his record. The psalm says God knew him before anyone else could have known the story. Then Martha reminds me how easy it is to be doing useful work and still become so anxious that I miss what matters most. I don’t need to choose between responsibility and attention to God. I need to put them in the right order. Work can be faithful, but worry can turn work into noise. My past can teach me without owning me, and my to-do list can serve me without becoming my master. Sometimes the next right thing is to sit still long enough to listen.
