It’s easy to welcome mercy when I need it, then start keepin’ score when somebody else receives it. These readings turn that around. The men who worked all day weren’t cheated out of what they’d been promised. Their anger started when somebody else received more than they thought he deserved. I know that temptation: turn a blessing into a grievance by looking sideways. God calls us back, gives us work worth doing, and stays generous beyond what we can measure. My part is to answer that call faithfully and be glad there’s room for somebody else. Mercy gets harder to celebrate when I start acting like I’m the one who owns it.
