Mr Edwards Homecoming: Coming Home Isn’t Always Easy

This week on Back to the Prairie: For the First Time, we welcome back one of Walnut Grove’s most memorable—and complicated—characters: Isaiah Edwards. Jen remembers Mr. Edwards as one of the original characters who made Little House on the Prairie so special. Dirk is meeting him again with fresh eyes—and wondering whether this larger-than-life, rough-around-the-edges pioneer is really as simple as he first appeared. We’ll break down the episode’s biggest moments, explore the real-world history behind the story, dig into Mr. Edwards’ backstory, uncover some trivia, and take a look at what was happening in the real world when this episode aired in 1974. It’s a story about friendship, second chances, and discovering that sometimes the hardest place to return to… is home. Welcome back to Walnut Grove. It’s time to head Back to the Prairie.

The 100 Mile Walk: A Journey Measured in Miles, Hardship & Determination

The Ingalls family faces one of its toughest challenges yet when a devastating hailstorm destroys their wheat crop, leaving Charles with no choice but to leave Walnut Grove in search of work. What follows is a grueling 100-mile journey that takes him far from home and into the dangerous world of rock quarrying. In this episode of Back to the Prairie: For the First Time, Jen and Dirk explore why “100 Mile Walk” feels so different from the earlier episodes—from its darker tone and frontier adventure story to the very real dangers of 19th-century travel and quarry work. We’ll also dig into the history behind the story, including how the episode draws inspiration from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s On the Banks of Plum Creek.

Country Girls — Prairie Rules, Schoolyard Rivalries & the Oleson Girls

This time on Back to the Prairie: For the First Time, Jen and Dirk head back to Walnut Grove for “Country Girls.” Laura and Mary Ingalls meet the Oleson girls, and the differences between country life and town life quickly turn into a battle of personalities, clothes, manners, and bragging rights. We’ll talk about the episode’s surprisingly relatable childhood rivalries, the introduction of Nellie Oleson as one of television’s most memorable little villains, and what “being a country girl” really meant in the 1870s. Plus, we’ll dig into the real history behind Walnut Grove and take a look at what was happening in the world when Little House on the Prairie first aired in 1974.
