2 White Girls Talk Bollywood
Season 1
by Kim Hughes & Katie Babione
This week’s movie is really two movies in one— a sweet comedy about an unlucky-in-love, good-for-nothing boy, and a drama about a wounded woman convinced she’ll never love again. And while it has some touching moments, we can’t help but think the film would have been better if it were just one or the other. Still, Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani give great performances, and the soundtrack is a lot of fun! Satyaprem Ki Katha was directed by Sameer Vidwans, and written by Karan Shrikant Sharma. Please be advised that this film, and therefore our recap and discussion, center largely around sensitive topics like rape and suicide. Like what you're hearing? Are you ready for one of the greatest love stories ever told? Not Romeo and Juliet, not Layla and Majnun, this is the story of Adi and Tara. Two people who were convinced that love and marriage are for fools... until they met each other! See their romance unfold in not one, but two films-- OK Kanmani, the Tamil Language original, and OK Jaanu, it's Hindi remake. OK Kanmani was written and directed by Mani Ratnam, and stars Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen. OK Jaanu was directed by Shaad Ali, and stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. We're finishing off our Super Hero Summer with a movie as big as the climate change crisis itself! A Flying Jatt is a (mostly) fun, goofy film that will leave you thinking about how YOU can be a super hero and save our planet. This movie stars Tiger Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nathan Jones, Amrita Singh, and Gaurav Pandey. It was written and directed by Remo D'Souza. Also, big news!! We millennials are finally getting our act together, and we're now on TikTok. Follow us there at 2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Like what you're hearing? What's the difference between a super hero and a super villain? Our film this week suggests it's a lot more complicated than just being good or evil. Because sometimes heroes are selfish, and sometimes villains just want to be loved! Minnal Murali stars Tovino Thomas and Guru Somasundaram, and was directed by Basil Joseph. It's also our first Malayalam language film-- and Happy Onam to all the Malayalis out there! Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Wanna hear more? Admit it: you've always wondered if your favorite video game hero would make it through airport security. We all have! And thank goodness a movie finally dared to ask that very question. We're back to superhero movies this week with SRK's self-proclaimed mid life crisis movie, Ra.One. You'll laugh, you'll cry (because of how hard you're laughing), and you'll rock out to the excellent soundtrack. Ra.One stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Tom Wu, and Armaan Verma. It was directed by Anubhav Sinha. Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Wanna hear more? We have playlists on YouTube and Spotify. Happy Indian Independence Day, everyone! Our film this week tells the true story of the Indian field hockey team winning its first gold medal as an independent nation. And while throwing off the yoke of imperialism is always something to celebrate, Gold doesn't shy away from exploring all the highs and lows of this turning point in history. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll remember how much fun it was to run around barefoot in the grass as a kid. Gold was written and directed by Reema Kagti and stars an ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Vineet Kumar Singh, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Sunny Kaushal, and Mouni Roy. Like what you're hearing? This week's episode takes us to Paris, where illegal dares, cornflake meltdowns, and LOTS of kissing await! Befikre is one of our absolute favorite Bollywood romcoms. It stars Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor as two passionate people who fall in love, out of love, and then in love again... as besties. Or maybe more? Aditya Chopra wrote and directed the film, and we have Vishal-Shekhar to thank for the truly excellent soundtrack. Like what you're hearing? The best trilogies come in threes, and Krrish is no exception! It’s been a wild ride—through alien encounters, circus infernos, and now battles with mutants in remote mountain labs. And in some ways, we’re ending exactly where we began—with love, with the power of sunlight, and with the reminder that anyone can be a hero if they do right by others. Krrish 3 is starring Hrithik Roshan (of course), Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Kangana Ranaut. It was written and directed by Rakesh Roshan. Like what you're hearing? We've all seen our fair share of super hero movies. But you've probably never seen one where the super hero races a horse, pretends to be a ghost, dresses up like a clown AND a pirate, and swims to an island faster than a helicopter can fly there. Unless, of course, you've already seen Krrish! The story of Rohit Mehra from Koi... Mil Gaya continues with his son, Krishna, also played by Hrithik Roshan. And though it's not perfect, this movie is certainly a lot of fun to watch. Krrish also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and was written and directed by Rakesh Roshan. Like what you're hearing? Who among us hasn't gazed at the stars and wondered if anyone up there is gazing back? This week's movie introduces us to a visitor from across the galaxy... but don't worry! He's not here to take over the planet. He's here to drink coke, torture Johnny Lever with cricket balls, and bestow some super powers on his new bestie. Koi... Mil Gaya stars Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta. It was written and directed by Rakesh Roshan. Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Wanna hear more?
