When does ‘Pull up your bootstraps!’, ‘Toughen up!’, and ‘Take it like a man!’ mean ‘your humanity is showing’ and we don’t like it?

The stereotype says that sensitive people can’t handle their own emotions. I say denying that emotions are a permanent fixture of the human condition isn’t ‘handling it’. Discounting emotions is what is done when that’s all one can bear to do… But what if we can do better?
