Episode notes

On Thursday, Anthropic shipped Claude Dashboards in beta: connect your data warehouse or an app like Salesforce, ask a question in plain English, and get a dashboard where every number shows the query behind it. In this weekend edition, Stephen Forte argues that for the simple 80 percent of what companies do with BI, the license and the analyst queue are now optional. He also gives a fair account of the 20 percent where Power BI and Tableau still earn their keep, and a weekend method for building your one-page Monday dashboard.

In this episode, Stephen Forte covers:

  • What shipped. Claude Dashboards is in beta on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, not Free. On Enterprise it's off until an owner turns it on under Organization settings > Artifacts. Each chart shows its query and when it was last refreshed, and usage counts toward your normal plan limits.
  • Disclosure. Stephen's company runs largely on Claude.
  • My take: the simple eighty percent. Power BI Pro lists at $14 per user per month and Tableau Cloud Creator at $75, both paid yearly. If your BI tool mostly turns out the same ten charts for five people every Monday, you may be paying a specialist to do a generalist's job. Anthropic itself says Dashboards "work alongside" BI tools.
  • What BI still does better. Governed metric definitions, security that limits each viewer to their own slice, scheduled refresh and alerts, embedding, and certified board numbers. Early reviewers note that shared Claude dashboards use each viewer's own access.
  • From Stephen's desk. Hand-built dashboards in Claude Code were powerful, but someone had to own the code, the hosting and the Monday refresh. Dashboards is a built-in template on a live connector.
  • The weekend method. Write down ten Monday numbers. Give each one a definition, a denominator and an owner, and note where it sits today. On Monday, connect one source, build version one, check three numbers against finance, and run it for four weeks before you cancel any seats.
  • Your AI note-taker needs a consent rule. ChatGPT's new Meetings plugin (beta) shows its consent reminder only to you. About a dozen US states require everyone's consent to be recorded. Put it in the invite, say it out loud, stop if anyone says no, and share the notes rather than the recording. Not legal advice.
  • The takeaway. The software is the easy part now. The definitions were always the hard part.
