Episode 8: The History of Bootleg Albums - Where Did They Come From, and Did They Finally Kill Off the Music Industry?

WNUT Talk by WNUT

Episode notes

On this installment of WNUT Talk we're digging into bootleg records, tapes, and CDs! From the folk scene of the 1960s, through 1980s pop, to this day — bootleg albums have been with us just about every step of the way. The feds have gone after them; the labels have tried to squash them; but like cockroaches in the walls of the establishment, they just won't die. We're digging in those crates, looking under those counters, and cranking up that contraband loud and proud.

What was the first bootleg album ever released? What was the highest bootleg seller of all time? Were they as a big a threat to the record labels as everyone made them out to be? And did they finally kill off the music industry? We've got the answers to all of that and SO much more on this episode of WNUT Talk, so roll your tapes!
