On the Day of Christ's Birth (St. John Chrysostom)
Episode notes
Today’s Sermon is On the Day of Christ’s Birth by St. John Chrysostom. Chrysostom served as the Archbishop of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine empire, 397-404. He died in 407 in exile for confronting the corruption of the empress. He is widely known as one of the the greatest preachers in church history, hence the nickname Chrysostom, which means “golden-mouth”. This sermon is one of the first Christmas sermons from the Greek-speaking Church we have and was likely preached on December 25, 387 during Chrysostom’s early ministry as a priest in Antioch. It was translated by Robert G. T. Edwards and published by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press in the book, Sermons on the Life of Christ.
